What is gait analysis, how do we use it in the shop and should you get one?
What is gait analysis?
Gait analysis is the study of the human gait cycle, but more specifically for us we look at the gait cycle when running.
We strongly believe that any gait analysis that just looks at foot strike is not good enough. After all, we run using our whole bodies and often many clues as to why you might be getting that niggle after a long run can be found higher up the kinetic chain.
In the context of buying a pair of running shoes it is one tool we can use to help identify the type of shoes that will suit your needs best, as well as enabling us to give advice on muscle groups that may need strengthening and others that may need lengthening.

We can apply this from multiple angles to show you what your feet and body are doing. Do I need a gait analysis?
If you are injury free and not planning on changing the type or amount of running you do then there is no need to get a gait analysis. Stick with what you are already doing!
If however you are finding you are particularly injury prone, looking to try a new type of running or starting to run much further a gait analysis could be a useful tool to help identify any potential issues.
Also, remember that you change as a runner. As you get fitter, stronger or faster your gait can change significantly. Conversely it can also change significantly after an injury or period without running. In these instances it always makes sense to have a quick gait check up to make sure you have the appropriate footwear, even if you previously knew your running style.
